Prof Anja Geitmann and Dr Youssef Chebli are plant sex experts! Back in 2013, when they were both working at the Université de Montréal (they’re now at McGill University), they did some research on what happens to pollen - the male sex cells of the plant world – at different gravity levels.
When a pollen grain lands on the stigma it grows a pollen tube, burrowing down through the style to deliver two sperm cells to the ovary. The pollen tube's the fastest growing cell in the plant kingdom, but can it do its job in space?
